Inwall75, my nitrates are at (and have never risen above) 0 ppm. my water quality is very clear. would there be any adverse effects to adding this product to my system?
also, could you please elaborate on filter floss? i am not quite sure what it is. thank you

I started using chemi pure elite today. with the addition of filter floss (thanks inwall75)
i made sure to rinse first. quite a bit of black stuff came off with the rinse. i gently rinsed until rinse water was clear and added to my canister filter.
everything seems to be in working order.

Just saw this. I was going to mention to rinse it well, and for a while. Luckily, you did. I have been using it since the start of my system (Oct. 2010), and have not had one bit of an algae outbreak. I run carbon also, although I'm pretty sure Chemi-Pure Elite has a form of carbon in it as well. I am very pleased with the product.

Chemi pure is a bit pricey but overall pretty good, I would change it every month but that's just me.

I have to admit I love this product - I couldn't believe how well it worked with in 24 hours. I had a gha outbreak from what I think was phosphates in the base rock. but be sure the water runs through the bags not around - or adjust them to run flat so the water runs over it.
I would recommend this to anyone IMO

Oh an I do rinse it every week - it collects a lot.

I have to admit... I never understood the point of Chemi pure. The benefits of carbon are well documented but you can get that anywhere. Plus it has also been shown that carbon needs to be changed out frequently. Chemi pure says you can run it for much longer.

GFO can be run if you need elite. There is also plenty of documentation on the exhaustion rates of carbon and GFO and they are not the same. So why run a product that uses them both?

But really I just never got the ion exchange resins. Ion exchange resins are the "DI" in RO/DIs. You need clean water to start, but don't know why you need to filter ions in sea water. Those get exhausted too and I can't see them lasting long with such a small amount and so many ions. I mean one thing resins filter is salts and removing a na- or a CL+ is easy. My point is that I have never seen any data of harmful ions floating around a tank that needs to be removed. And especially since we can easily run a DI bottle on a tank but how many people run DI bottles on their tank?

The real reason I don't care for cocktails and magic potions is because they are too expensive. High grade carbon and GFO can be bought in bulk much cheaper. Resins can be bought much cheaper in bulk. But if you got some bulk carbon, GFO, and resin beads in bulk.... nobody would throw them all in the same reactor because they all have different depletion rates. So I just never got why Chemi-pure and Elite were so widely loved.
