I personally would try the lights out method first. I do want to point out that the chemical route is also only a band aid solution. If you don't address the underlying cause of the problem (i.e. High nutrients, old lights, poor flow, etc.), then the problem WILL return. If you can give us as many of the params as possible we will try and help you pin point the root cause. There are many other options as to where to start that I would take, all before resorting to chemicals. It won't be an easy battle but at least in the end you will be rid of the cyano for good.

    Just my two cents,
    Jake

That is a great point as well. Most likely a problem with phosphates IME. I run filter media to remove phosphates as well. Also though, after using chemiclean, I didn't have any more problems with cyano for a couple of months. I repeated the treatment and that is when I new I had to do something different.

I agree that is a likely cause, and we all know the problem is that you get a false reading when you test, so it does make it difficult. I don't even bother testing for phophate on my tank anymore.

I still test for them to know when to change out my filter media. I guess you could avoid the testing and go by how often you have to clean off your glass. ;D

IMO you shouldnt use chemiclean. There are many risks even if you follow the proper procedure and I dont think the chemiclean will eliminate your cyano for good. You need to get to the root of the problem. JM2C

What are the risk? I haven't noticed any side effects of using this product. While using it, my corals still opened up and everything. I personally woulh have never of used the product if there were risks that were serious to a reef tank. You are right that it will not eliminate it for good, but it will get rid of it temporarily. I also agree that you need to get the root of the problem.

I've never used it, but I think one concern is that it can kill the beneficial bacteria in the tank. They need the nitrogen in the tanks to survive, wiping it all out kills their food supply.

I would think that if you were wiping out all the nitrogen in the system by using this product then you would have 0 nitrates at the end of treatment. This would also cause another cycle wouldn't it. I had nitrates at the end of my treatment, and I didn't go through another cycle either. Maybe I am just confused.
