is a mini-cycle possible? could be because of some ammonia?

I assume there is no trace copper in the tank, even from copper piping...

I don't have any nitrates in my tank, and my fuzzy chitons did not last long.

The tropical pacific chitons I have in my tank are doing great however.

Were these chitons from the Caribbean?

 I don't think evolution/God has a complaint department but it can't hurt to try. Have you done anything to rid yourself of the nitrates?
