a couple nights ago i had to get rid of my small tank b.c it had a crack and was leaking. so i moved my chromis into the big tank with my other chromis and clownfish. this morning i noticed that the chromis had no back fins anymore. its still swimming and acting normal except it seems to like the upper left side of my tank or its afraid to go anywhere else. i have one damsel that i could never get out. its the Three spot domino damselfish. i know it was attacking the chromis when i first put him in there but i didnt worry because the damsel did that to my other fish and then he stopped. i was wondering if the damsel did this or he lost his fins from something else?

I'm pretty sure it was damsel, IMO they are the most aggressive fish, pound for pound. I would remove it even if it wasn't the culprit.

I am not a gambler, but I think it would be a sure bet that the damsel did it! I would take the damsel out if you can get him.

EDIT: posted at the same time as triggerfish

Deverrs - it does look like fight damage

IME, when territorial battles reach the stage where damage like this is done
then it does not get better

if fish skirmish to establish pecking order, once territories are established the agression does subside

but when damage like this is done IME it will go on and on as the damsel has decided this chromis does not belong in its tank - it goes beyond normal territorial establishing issues and becomes one of personalities.

I had a similar incident between a flame back angel and a maroon clown
I tried re arranging rock work three times in fact
I tried isolating the aggressor ( flame back) for a couple of weeks in a 12 x 6 inch mesh breeding trap - as soon as the flameback was back in the tank, he went on a seek and destroy mission on the clown

I had to make a desicion on which of the 2, I was going to keep in there
and I feel you might need to do the same

thanks and well this morning i woke up to a dead damsel and chromis :( and my other fish acting very stressed. The anemone i had looked like it died too.. it was pretty bad. My dad had me remove the chromis with no fins b.c he thought that it was infecting the tank :/
But i went to the fish store and he tested my water and everything was good and the anemone was prbly what killed everything. My clownfish, Sparky and Jaws!, are still alive and moving around again!!! :) they are my first ones and have survived everything thats gone wrong with the tank!

The lack of a fin was most likely from the damsel. I agree, damsels are too territorial and they are on my blacklist. An anemone dying would definitely polish everything off though.
