I am figuring out a stock for my 60g reef tank and was wondering if chromis were really that cool, that I should get a small school of them. I currently have a melanurus wrasse and a pair of percula clownfish, I am planning on getting a YWG and a royal gramma for sure. If I got the chromis my stock would be full. I also like these fish, Kole tang, CBB, firefish, bicolor blenny, and pretty much all wrasses. Would you prefer the other fish over the chromis?

I have a group of 10 chromis. They're retarded. I read somewhere that fish don't actually school in aquariums they shoal. Mine stay together for the most part. One or two inevitably end up in my overflow and I spend 10 minutes fishing them out. I've noticed they can be a bit aggresive at times. Not sure what the deal is with that. They're nice but certainly my most expendable fish. Meaning if I were going to get rid of anything to get a new fish they'd be first to go. I'd much rather get 3 lyretails females an one male. My CBB is my favorite fish but I've also found it to be the second hardest fish to take care of aside from a mandaran pair I failed at keeping.

Ok, what fish would you get over the chromis out of the list of fish I put?

The aggressiveness is normal. They are damsels. Also, in aquariums as, in nature, they tend to show dominance through aggression. They naturally kill each other off slowly until there is one left. It's just part of their social structure. If you don't mind that, then they are interesting IMO. You just may need to replace some once and a while.

60 is a bit small for anthias. There may be a few species, where you could get two or 3 of, but you need to do your research. Anthias can be quite aggressive also, and require a lot of feeding.

I love my school of 6(formerly 7). 5 of them always stay in a school, and send one scout out. They have great personality, very active, brings a lot of movement to the aquarium. They are frenzied eaters too...like throwing chum into shark-infested waters. I recommend them, if only for an inexpensive schooling fish.

It depends on what you are looking for. I have a Midas blenny that thinks he's a Chromi. He's always out in the open swimming. Like I said I love the CBB but he can be a bit of a challenge. I also have a Blue Hippo that is quite the character. Kole tangs are nice but as with any tang they need room to swim. If you want to try the Chromis go for it. They're plenty cheap and very social. I have 4 blue and 6 green. Out of the two I like the blues better.

Cardinals, are not aggressive and will stick together. I probably wouldn't call them more interesting, but certainly can be great fish. I particularly like some of the less common ones, like the Orange Lined Cardinalfish.

Also, I like all the other fish you mentioned as well, except the CBB. CBB rarely survive in an aquarium. probably <25% survival rate.
