I have an 84 gallon tank(100+ total water volume) that is just about done with the "initial cycle", and will be adding a CuC and a few small fish. Would 3 or 4 Blue/Green Chromis be able to hold the bacterial population for a few months by themselves in a tank that size?

chromis are difficult to keep... expect them to die until there is only one left, as that is what many folks experience.

Agreed...Chromis are not a good first fish, but once you get the hang of it they may even start breeding!
I would say start with 5

With the cuc and chromis you should have no problems. Even if you do just allow some time for normal adjustments of the bacterial bed as you would when stocking.

And gabbagabbawill is right they tend to pick each other off until one lone survior remains. But that could work on your favor as well, nothing maintains ammonia like a dead fish.

What other fish do well in a school? I liked the Chromis due to the less aggression down the road. I have not come across anything stating the picking off of each other, but will keep reading.

Firefish are a great hardy schooling fish, and come in many different color schemes. They are also pretty cheap like the chromis

    +1 to firefish

Also anthias in small groups with odd numbers are very nice.

Yes they are beutiful...However I don't think you want to spend 200$ for a group of anthias to cycle the tank. If you do get anthias though go with Barletts as they are very hardy.

Cardinals are a great hardy choice, Scissortail gobies also

5 chromis would be great. Gabba doesn't realize the wisdom of what he said. Yes, some will/might die and for the continual cycle a small dead fish is just the right thing. If none die (which sometimes they don't necessarily) I think 5 will suffice to bring the tank to where you want it.

I thought the cycle was over, as stated in the first post.
