Hey King, I was reading in The Reef Aquarium vol 3 that Sprung suggests using cider block as a core in a stack of LR, the DIY LR is portland and oyster shell. True it takes months of cycling to cure, but good porosity and certainly nice cave, thinking about gluing live rock to the faces of it, have you thought any more? My DIY LR has been in since Feb with no cyano, seemingly no ill effects, getting a nice coating of coraline and you have a hard time telling my man made from store bought LR. Surely the same would be true with cinder block. I think I will try cycling some and see what it looks like testing the water.

Concrete in cinder blocks will also break down over time due to the salt.

That has not been my experience. I have seen old concrete blocks submerged for decades and still not crumbly. But I concede I have seen concrete walkways and streets crumbling after only a few years. My garage floor "gauled" from salt dripping off the cars after only a few months. Different composition? Oxygen?

Frost heaves are harsh on roads, sidewalks and driveways.
