    My thoughts exactly since croceas only get to 7 inches or so.

    Beautiful clam, if it presently looks that good I would not worry in the least. Sooo pretty.

    I can find no reference specifically saying that Croceas lose their byssal thread. I did find lots of sources saying that they will drop them periodically and then form a new one.

    If it is still extending well and you are positive it does not have any parasites, then I would not worry.

    I believe that because the Crocea is a rock boring clam, that the basal threads probably contribute only partially to maintainning position. When you see them in the wild they are buried in the rock with only the uppermost edge of the shell and the mantel showing. Just like little jewels.

    Yeah that makes sense he's grown a lot since I first got him. he was just a baby ha ha Now he's probably a good 5 or 6 inches. so far so good

    The biggest indicator of clam health is reaction to stimulous. If it's reacting more quickly than before, that sounds like a sign that it's happier than before. As far as the threads go, like was said before they are a rock boring clam, so it might simply not be using it's threads if it's not in the rocks. I've not seen personaly a crocea use it's threads a whole lot when they are in the sand.
