Purchased a new clam. It had what looked like sand pieces stuck to it. Tooth brush wouldn't take it off. Was afraid it was the pyrimid snails I'd heard about, so while he was in a bowl, we put the clam under a 30power microscope and got some photos of some critters we'd like to identify. The white sand stuff was barnacle looking things. There were hundreds of egg sacs with thousands of eggs though on the shell. Freshwater dip did not remove anything of the eggs. Scraping them off was only way they would come off.
Photo is taken through the eye piece of 30 power microscope.

A few parasites died but some remained and transfered over to the microscope with him. Check out photos and see if you know what this one is. Thanks.

dont put that clam in your tank whatever you do! Sounds like the eggsacs might be pyramid snails, but I dont know what that is. I did try to look and see baby pyramids, but never saw pictures of them.

It sounds like pyramids as the only way you were able to get them off was with a brush. There is a site called Clamsdirect.com that could probably help you more I would post there if I was you

not pyramid snails. Possibly some sort of pod. I agree with the advice, if you don't know what it is KEEP IT OUT OF THE TANK.

Looks like a small crab, or related. I'd keep it QT'd for some length of time and if it is ok toss it in the tank and if not tear down the QT tank.

I dont know what the creature is, but the eggs do look like they could be pyramid snail eggs. And sorry to say, but don't expect that clam to live much longer. Dipping was not a good idea.

They were not pyramid snails that we saw. The shape of some critters were like a sharks tooth. No pyramids were seen under the microscope. My hunny picked off every egg/sac that was on his shell.

Why shouldn't he have been fw dipped? He'd opened this morning and looking fine, but I realize that may be a temporary thing.

Keep in mind these could only be seen under a high powered microscope.

I always fresh water dip clams before adding them to my systems. As long as the ph and temperature of the dipping water matches the tank water, it shouldn't do any harm to the clam at all.

I did A LOT of reading last night on fw dipping clams before I did it. The ph and temp was same as tank. Clams Direct .com said to fw dip him also.

So far no one has been able to id the critter. I have photo posted on 4 sites. Everyone else said if they were pyramid snails I'd been able to see the egg sacs with my eyes (which we couldn't). Anyone know any microbiologist ?
