One of my cleaner shrimp died the other day. I couldn't figure out why.

I think I may know now. What temp can a shrimp handle?

I've been getting different readings from my thermometers. My regular one, was reading the tank to be between 71 - 73 F, but my chiller was saying it was 78.

I though maybe the chiller was wrong, nope the chiller is right. I just took my coralife thermometer out of my QT tank and into my main tank. The temp was 79 F. I guess maybe I should trust the $400 piece of equipment over the $25 one.

Is it possible my shrimp died from this change, of course the other one is doing ok?

Hmmmm. Well shrimp are very sensitive to water changes. I had a shrimp die during a power outage when i raised the temp from 72-79. In my opinion that change in temp is definitely a possibility.

Just to be clear, the tank went from 78 to 71? I'm not sure but it sorta sounds like you were just getting different readings...if that's so and there wasn't a big change in temperature then the shrimp dying was probably due to something else. Do you test your water often? Did you recently add anything new to your tank? Shrimps can be very sensitive to really anything.

Sorry about your shrimp, hopefully you can find out what went wrong.

First be sure it's the actual carcass and not a molt. If it's a molt you won't see the cleaner until the new shell hardens in a few days.

Temperatures drop lower than that regularly in shipping and while it's stressful, it's not always deadly if proper care is taken to reverse it. I have found our marine animals can survive temps swings into the lower temps much easier than into the higher temps. 71 isn't all that low and 79 isn't all that high. If the difference between the two was a matter of an hour or two, yes that can be a problem.

Lots of different factors it could be. Tough to nail down just one without great detail.

Sorry to hear about it. Good luck.

static/current in the tank will also kill crustaceans. ground your tank.

rickzter, static/current would that not be felt if the person touched the water? For i had two of my cleaners die off in the same weekend. I thought it was cause of my Nitrates hitting 140 but nothing else in the tank died not even a psychedelic Mandarin

Whoa! I would definitely think it was the 140 nitrates and be thankful nothing else died instead of looking for another reason. You sure that test kit was reading right?

Awesome mushroom in your avatar btw. I was always a sucker for the simple corals.

Although 71 and 79 is not low or high temps, a quick change from one to the other can be fatal.

LOL it's fine. I'm just bored tonight. Another 24 hour shift awaits me in the morning, but at least I'll be in a parade and can make the little kiddies happy for a bit.
