Soaking one of my power heads in a vinegar bath, do you guys tear it completely apart or just let it run for 12 hours and scrub and rinse and go on to the next,

I am doing the same thing right now, Lol. I soak for an hour in vinegar then using a tooth brush and scrub pad wipe off all the crud.

I use straight distilled white vinegar, no water, and it takes about an hour at most. Tear it completely apart so it gets cleaned out everywhere then a quick rinse and its ready to go.

I do part distilled white vinegar with warm water and let it soak. I then take a toothbrush and scrub the stuff off. came pretty clean except for some coralline on the outside.

When you add water to the vinegar you raise the pH which is exactly what you don't want to do. Straight vinegar is still acidic so works quickly but is aquarium safe. Plus when you use it undiluted you can reuse it over and over, I strain it through a paper towel, paint filter or old panty hose and put it back in the gallon jug for next time. The pH stays usable for months to a year that way.

I agree & this is what I have done in the past. For the most part I leave mine covered in coralline algae & only clean any blocked grates & impeller assy.

Hydor also makes a cleaner that from what I heard removed all calcium and lime called MAGI-KLEAN. I haven't tried it myself, I look of the coralline on mine.

Thanks to all. Mine was soaking over night so we will see. Will need a smaller bucket to be able to cover the power head with vinegar cause i let it run to clean the propeller. thanks again.
