How often do you clean overflows?

I clean mine maybe twice a year. I was about to do it the other day, as I noticed a huge hair algae build up. Then my Sea Hair got in there and all the hair algae was gone. I have since built a cover out of black Acrylic that blocks all light from the over flows. Now no algae grows in there

did you put the acrylic on the inside or the outside ofthe tank? I was going to paint it when I did the back of the tank and didn't.
