I got same sand that has been sitting in a bucket for a wile now and some rock that has been in a open box. whats the best way to clean them? some one told me to stick a hose in the bucket intel the water is clear.

What kind of sand is it, and was it used in a tank before? If it's fine grain and used I wouldn't put it into a tank even after "cleaning" it. Get new sand. As for the rock, was it used before also? If not then scrub it and rinse it. If the rock was used you might want to nuke it.

I use a pressure washer to clean dry LR with before I use it.

As for the sand, if it's good aragonite, you can wash it repeatedly with a hose (do it in smaller amounts so you have room to hand-stir it as the water runs into the bucket). Repeat this until the water runs clear.

You can use boiling water to cover the rock and let it sit for a while to kill anything that may be on it, then rinse in RODI water.

Boiling rock is always strongly discouraged. All kinds of nasties can become vaporized, which you would then breath in. Bleach would be safer IMO.
