    those water change kits with the big funnel attached to a smaller hose work real good for cleaning sand if you're careful with em and only cost about five bucks, when its sand cleaning time at my house i hook up a canister filter and stir the crap up out of the sand let it settle and repeat until i'm satisfied, you could suck out alot of benificial stuff doing this though
