Cleaning Tank a "Cluster-F***"

check out my tank thread "wildreefs 220" you can see the filter socks i use .
diffrent sizes are avilible , mines of the larger ones availible.

 

I checked out every picture on your thread... which the by the way are mind blowing...
the corals are awesome (not worthy yet)
However, couldn't find a thing on the sock...

 

thats very nice of you to say so ( thank you ) it's coimg along nicely since i fired it back up in Jan 08
needing more LR but watching for some nice figi to add more to it.

but have added a fe more little corals to it in the last few weeks , mush rooms been booming, things been growing well in general.

that what i use to filter for debris etc. and i run carbon bags that are in one of them, ( bout a pound and a half total ).

 

Its just a cloth bag that you can fit over the drain pipe to the sump. It just strains the larger particles out of the tank.

Looks like this. They run about 4 dollars or so at most LFS.

 

Is the sock placed over the drip drain pipe... leading into the tray...
If so, I already have a filter media there with the blue side up / white side down...
Is it necessary to double it up with sock and media?

That there sounds like some damned fine advice! I drop carbon mesh bags in the hangon O/F. Along with regular cleaning of the filter sock in the sump, the tank couldn't look better. Who ever said to aim your powerheads to create a water column directed at your O/F is right, although I prefer aiming for motion all over the tank. But the clean up crew is a major factor when doing that. pros and cons on both sides I guess.

 

How do you create a water column? I have four powerheads ... at the present time they are scattered as to hit any dead spots and to create water chaos for the fish....
But this water column sounds beneficial to filtering out crap to the skimmer

 

well, when setting up p/h's some people go for the circular tank motion which helps the total water turnover per hour. I also have my p/h's set up for wave-like-flow but they're all directed up so I get some turbulence on the surface which keeps food and crap in the top third of my tank. I think this makes it easier on my sump to filter it out. whatever hits the sand is taken care off by the cleanup crew.
