I sent a request to John Maloney on what he would recommend for a CUC for me. Here is what he told me:

300 Dwarf Ceriths - small effective cleaners
    90 Nassarius
    88 Florida Ceriths
    55 Blue Legs
    50 Assorted Hermits
39 Large Nerite and 40 Small to Medium Nerites

Since I don't have any experience with CUC or this size of a tank......does this seem excessive or about right?

    Thanks for the input!

I don’t like hermits. All they do is eat snails, and leftover food. I would replace the hermits with more nassarius snails, Or just don’t get the hermits.

+1 on the hermits. I had such a bad time with hermits they were forever exiled from my tanks for 6 years. I had ten wierd indonesian hermits and they havent even looked at a snail so far. in the last 3 months they HAVE doubled in size which worries me.....

Same here on the hermits. They are methodically picking off my snails. I've got red and blue legs and don't know if one or both are doing it.

I got rid of all hermits that weren't blue leg. I can't imagine a reef without them. I add some extra snails once a year... no biggy

I would get some Turbo Snails like 4 of em Mine have grown quite big and I have got tons of little ones in the process of growing in my tank. The only thing that is crappy about them is that they knock over corals that arent glued down :(

Many people don't get the right hermits and then complain. Not saying this is true for all snail eating incidents, but I think many are.

You don't want assorted hermits if you ask me.
