The empty shells I see laying around are not cracked or have holes in them that I can see. I will have to examine them more closely tonight. Thanks amcarrig. I have read some stuff online of how these guys can hurt you if you're not careful. Not the smashing ones the others.

Smashers can hurt you as well. In the first link that birdlady provided, the author of the article posted a picture of what his little smashing mantis did to him. :)

True. I have just read more on the others is all. My wife is not liking the thought of them being in the tank. Especially since she hand feeds our eel and anemones.

No worries, I've never heard of a mantis attacking somebody's hand when it was in the tank. The guy that wrote that article got smashed when he tried to pull what he thought was his dead mantis out of the tank. :)

Ok. That will help relax her then. If I do find one...does anyone want it? Free of course. I am not interested in keeping them myself, but have read many people are such as yourself.

Well if I do find it and catch it, I will send you a pic of it and if it is what you desire, then it is yours. If not, thank you for the link.

The red light trick won't help you find the mantis. They have the best sight of any animal in the world and can see in infrared, ultraviolet, and polarized light as well as normal visible light. http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/aquarius/vision.html

Were the snail and hermit shells all over the tank or were they all piled up in an area right next to your live rock? Mantis will usually drag their prey to their main den. This can help you locate the rock it is living in.

You might want to reconsider keeping it....they are ABSOLUTELY FASCINATING if they are in their own nano tank.

Here is a picture of my peacock eating a little formula one.
