Thanks.  That's Cuddles.  My first peacock got named Fluffy as a joke by some people on a different board and the silliness has continued.  I recently lost her to old age. :(   Because the nano tank that I kept Cuddles in was on my computer desk, she got very accustomed to my presence and would be out her den quite often.  In fact, Cuddles was fascinated by the movement that typing does to a computer screen.  If I was ever typing, there was a guarantee that she would be out. One eye would be on me and the other eye would be on the computer monitor.

    Poppy,
If you look at my signature, you can see a faint line (really two) crossing the eyes.  This seperates each eyestalk into two.  If they lose an eye in a fight, they still have depth perception because in reality, they are just down to two eyes from four.

I also have two wennerae which are a much smaller species that are common hitchhikers with Florida live rock.  If you got your rock from Tampa Bay Saltwater or Liverocks.com, then there is a good chance that this is the type you have.  If so, don't worry about putting your hands in there...they are a very small species and are not one of the real powerful ones.  Regardless, more likely then not, they would just hide further in the den when your hand is around rather than attack.

In case you get to see it, then I wanted you to know what wennerae look like.  Don't get caught up on coloration though.  Wennerae is a species that can change color with each molt.  http://www.blueboard.com/mantis/pics/page_n_wennerae.htm  http://www.blueboard.com/mantis/pics/isaari_hammers.htm

Here is a pic of a meral spread.  http://www.blueboard.com/mantis/pics/cline_meral.htm If you ever put your hands in the tank and the mantis lifts up it's body and shows it's smashers as opposed to hiding in the live rock....get your hand out right away.  I doubt this would ever happen and I thnk that amcarrig gave you good advice regarding mantis strikes....just wanted you to be informed.

I don't have many good pics of my critters.  Amcarrig, do you have any to share?

Thank you for your insight inwall. It is appreciated. Some great reading there. Thank you. Who knows, maybe once I find and see this guy I will want to keep it. My live rock was purchased from a local LFs here in IL. I was actually looking at buying some more live rock from liverocks.com for my new 75g I have set up. Not sure if I want to make it a complete reef or a FOWLR tank. Wife and I are still debating which route to take.

Thanks again for all your help inwall and amcarrig.

LOL...funny thread and great pic. Looks like an awesome pet to me amcarrig.

BTW...Would you mind flying to St. Louis and taking some good pics of my tank LOL!!!

It's nice to really meet you. Dispelling the myths of stomatopods in the reefkeeping arena is good but it has also been bad. I've been seeking out another peacock for two months and now everyone is keeping them instead of sending them to me.....AAARRRGGGHH!!!

Oh well, at least every case of New Tank Syndrome that kills livestock is no longer blamed on mantis...people are finally starting to understand that a horrible, evil Satan is not stalking their fish and that is why they are dead. The selfish part of me would like this false belief to continue until I get another peacock but I guess you can't have things both ways.

Very nice tank amcarrig. My wife and I love it.

I think we figured out what the sound was. The Scopas Tang is going into the corner and picking at the silicone and making the snap/clicking sound we think we have been hearing. We caught him in the act this time. Before it was a couple clicks every now and then. These clicks kept on coming so we each took a side of the tank and started looking...he went back to the corner and did it again. So I apologize if I got anyone's hopes up for a Mantis. I was actually hoping I had one with all that I have read on here and the pics I have seen of them. Just so I could see one in person. Oh well. Sorry about all the unneeded excitement.

I am thinking the Tang is picking off some type of algae on the silicone or is really bored. Any guesses as to what this means?

    Thanks,

    T

Thanks inwall! It is one of the most interesting critters I've ever had the pleasure of keeping. I only wish it was as "outgoing" as the peacock can be. Mine just hides out most of the time and the only time I ever see his entire body is when he's feeding. He does pop his front half out of his burrow any time I stare at the tank though so it's not all that bad :)

I've been trying my best to dispel the myths and rumors about mantis but most folks are still too set in their minds to accept that most of the deaths that occur in tanks is caused by things other than a stomatopod.

I too have noticed a new trend in the hobby in that more and more people seem to want to keep them as pets so things are looking better for their reputation! Hope I don't have any trouble finding a peacock when I'm ready for one!! :)

As for St. Louis....I'd go just about anywhere where it isn't raining right now! I'm not ready for Autumn! :(

How funny is that? You must be relieved! Hopefully, you'll consider keeping a mantis someday but at least it'll be a choice :)

As for the tang, it was probably just picking some algae that was growing on the silicone. Tangs can be silly sometimes :)

Well after talking with you on here...I was somewhat excited about finding the little guy. The more I read and see pics of them, the more I become intrigued with them. They are very unique. I am having my wife read the articles you sent to me as well as the pics. She saw one pic and thought they were cute so who knows, maybe she will want one also. She thought the emerald crabs were cute so we purchased 3 of those last week. We may be proud Mantis parents before too long ourselves. [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

I sure hope so! There's a lot of good reading in the mantis forums on Reef Central and www.grimreefers.com.

To tell the truth, I think they're pretty cute myself but I have a hard time convincing my friends of that :)
