Every night when the lights go out I hear 3 clicks in a row. I have heard this for almost 6 months in my 28 bow front. I have never seen anything. Now I have upgraded to a 55 and did not hear anything or almost a week and now I hear a single click every once in a while when the mh lights are not on. Still have not seen anything. I have had mantis shrimps in the past never heard anything but did see them. wondering if it is a Pistol shrimp. Also the rocks were purchased for tampabaysaltwater.com

I've had that same click sound for 2 yrs. i think their pistol's and i think they are fine. although i have read (not on this site) that if big enough they can crack an aquarium. i could be way off tho. get a flashlight with a red filter and have a look-see after dark. kinda cool to see all the lil guys crawling around.

only matises can crack the aquarium and even then it has to be a HUGE mantis. peacocks are the only ones and that is like a ten gallon they can crack, not a 30 and up.

Have you ruled out that the sound is coming from your lights as they cool off?

Either your halides cooling down or a pistol shrimp. They are completely reef safe and as long as you have a 30+ gallon tank, there won't be any issues. Best way to tell if you have a pistol is look for a crap load of burrows under your rocks. If I want mine to come out, I take a piece of krill and place it by any burrow, within 30 seconds, there is a shrimp there retrieving it.

id say pistol as well, i heard it for awhile too, took out the rock my scoli came on, and bam a .25 in pistol. For the size it made a loud noise. He will do no harm, so dont worry about it too much. you will most likely never see it for find it, i was breaking the rock my scoli was on in half thats the only reason i saw found mine.

Being that it is tampa bay saltwater rock there is a good chance it is either a mantis or a pistol shrimp.

I knew a guy that filled his 100 with rock from there and pulled out 7 mantises. I got my mantis from that company as well (on purpose though).
