On a close loop system you have a pump that pumps water out of the tank and back into it in several places without going to any type of sump/fuge, and is used just for circulation. That way you can use 1 pump for circulation and do away with power heads in the tank itself.

My next system will definately have one...;)

    Hi Mark
it means pump with return and no need for any additional power heads
all the flow comes from the return pump, spread across many inlets

closed means exactly what it sounds like... it keeps sucking and pumping, sucking and pumping.
You can hook a bunch of different inlets with a big pump but either way, USUALLY there is no filtering involved, just suck and pump to circulate water from different angles.

    Hope that helps!

Yes, I run them and as long as your pump's head height pressure doesn't out-do the rated max GPH, you are fine. I had to install a ball valve to tone it down because you could hear the gear inside grinding from all the pressure. If you don't have enough pressure though, it won't switch.
It's not all that complicated though, those are just tid bits of info.
I love my SCWDs. If my main pump goes out with the SCWD on it, I still have my closed loop to keep water moving for the coral.
I want to go with one big pump and a manifold but affraid of the high cost in external pumps and then, if it ever goes out... jeesh!

Moral: I like my SCWDs! lol
