extremely simple concept! You have a dedicated pump outside the system just for flow. The pump pulls water out of an inlet on your tank and distributes it elsewhere in the tank. basically the water goes from tank to pump back to tank

"Another method is the closed loop in which water is pulled from the main tank into a pump which returns the water back into the aquarium via one or more returns to create water turbulence"

Like hooking up a sump to your system only without the sump :) Used to increase flow in your dt.Some tanks have drilled holes in the back/bottom which allows you to do this or you can rig you up some pvc over the back of the tank. here is a link that might help. Whats the purpose?? Is it cheaper than the wet/dry system? what about skimming...the use of a chiller...an ats...? if your JUST circulating water with a close loop system, how beneficial is it to your inhabitants?

You don't want to have a torrent raging through your sump/fuge, the flow through this area should be low to allow efficient water processing and also to not to have a drastically changing water level when the sump pump is switched off and on. To have an increased flow in your DT you can either use powerheads in there or just use a closed loop using one pump and with multiple outlets, I use a SCWD on mine like melevsreef website mentioned above. Closed loops tend to be neater and can produce a lot of flow compared to large powerheads in your DT.

You would use a sump for all the water processing (skimming, fuge, chiller, ATO) and a closed loop just connected to your DT.

A closed loop is just to add flow in the DT. It is not really for filtration.
