    Hi

    I added a piece of green star polyp two weeks ago and it has never opened? as you can see in photo it looks like it has turned brown or is covered in a kind of algae??

    There are a few polyps open ( around 20) but the rest have never opened up??

    And the other day i moved a piece of star polyp that i had to another spot in the tank and now it seems it has closed down too??

    There is one piece open (see pic) but the rest are all closed?

    All my params are where they should be, and the tank has good flow!

    Any advice?? :confused::-/:cry:

    Check your flow throught the area and try to match to the area that you moved the once flourishing GSP from.

    GSP is super simple to frag, on of the easiest corals out there. Just take and cut a couple small pieces of the gsp mat off the rock and glue to small pieces of lr and distribute them about your tank, that way you can expose it to multiple different kinds of flow, light, etc. Careful if you leave it on your rock work and it takes off and establishes itself its very hard to curb its growth.

    Hey Colcol79, I had a simalar problem. I had a huge piece of rock that is completely covered in star polyps that I received from a friend of mine. It took about 2 days for them to come out. My tank is still going through it stages since I only started my tank in May 20th this year. All of a sudden I was getting the brown algae all over the place. Then my polyps we not coming out at all. After 5 days I got worried.

    So this is what I did. I used a turkey baster and shot water all over it to get the brown algae off of it. Then I moved my powerhead over to my polyps to direct current directly over my polyps. Sure enough, overnight they started to bloom again. They are now better than ever. Hope this helps.

    The 1st pic was before, 2nd & 3rd pics are overnight trial after I used the turkey baster & moving the powerhead. The 4th pic was taken tonight. Great color & they are loving the flow.

    What you have is some red cyano on top of them. This happens to mine from time to time. Get a soft toothbrush, and wipe them off gently. They should open in a day or two. GSP will close now and then, and stay closed for up to a week. The mat (Purple part) still looks Ok.

    I believe that star polyps, mushrooms and zoas really benefit from iodine supplementation and color improves/ intensifies with continued use; although some may disagree. From my experience, I think that they prefer a tank with elevated Iodine concentrations at approx. .06ppm. The Reef Aquarium Vol.2 has a section on iodine supplementation. Remember, to test for anything you add to your tank.

    ...and the Iodine test is very difficult...to have any confidance in the test results, all at the same time...I would run a blank (Di water), two standard tests, and two at 2x sensitivity...then struggle to determine the shade of blue referenced in the Di/straight/sensitive test... in the end...for me, toooooo much work to get consistent test results...
