I tried to find an answer to this and could not. Forgive me if this is has been answered already and point me in the right direction.

Here is my question; I am just starting a SW aquarium (50 gallon) and am using crushed coral for sand. We did rinse it off before putting it in the tank but after waiting over 1 week for the water to clear if we touch the sand there is still a cloud that comes off it and it takes almost a day to clear.

Should I be able to stir the bottom up without this happening?

Should I keep stirring up the bottom until this stops happening?

    Thanks!

how did you rinse the sand?
(you may not have rinsed it enough)
did you put salt in the tank?
    (it could be undissolved salt?)

Crushed coral requires a lot of rinsing before you can get rid of that dust from it. get a gravel cleaner and siphon the crushed coral and removed most of the dust from it....you will never fully get rid of it but it will eventually just settle at the bottom...

OK, it seems obvious to me that I did not rinse well enough so what do you recommend I do now or don't I need to worry about it? I put some salt in yesterday but the problem I described was happening before.

We tried the gravel cleaner but decided to take the sand out, clean it properly and start over. I don't want problems later so I thought it would be better to take extra time now.

Although you are re rinsing it, just as janaco said you will always have some.
my tank is over 2 years old and I still get dusty storms from my CC bed.
