I beg to differ with you, I had a 75 gallon with Various Cichlid's, I say various because there were at least 10 different Pairs in there and I couldn't tell you their names if I tried! I just know that they came from all over the place, Africa, south America and other places.

They all lived, ate, laid eggs, hatched, grew, died, the whole gamut in a tank that I rarely if ever paid any attention to except for feeding and topping of for at least 5 years. I really don't remember doing maybe 3 water changes on that tank the whole time I had it. they had so many babies that I was taking them to the Pet store on a weekly basis for a while!

They are amazingly resilient little/big buggers or at least thats what I found them to be.

As far as what you have in your tank, if it works then go for it...

My grandfather had what I think was a 210 gallon tank an it was truly a multi species tank, he had everything from Guppies, swordtail's, Mollies, tire-track and fire eels, Angels, Barbs to Pacu's, Black ghost and small clown Knife's, Freshwater rays and so much other stuff in there, all at the same time.

He had so many fish in that tank at times is was hard to find open water. It was the most amazing thing. Had live plants that grew so well he sold them back to the pet stores all the time. The live breeders had babies and the big fish would eat the mothers and a few weeks later the babies would have babies and start the cycle over, so feeding was easy.

He had a few mishaps like the day he saw one of the knifes catch and eat a eel, swam around for an hour with the tail end sticking out of his mouth. But for the most part he had good luck with it. Had it up and running like this for many years, until he couldn't take care of it anymore, and unfortunately I was in Colorado so I couldn't help him so my aunts made him take it down.

I guess my point is you never can tell what will go together or not till you try it. Except for Salt (clown) and fresh (ciclids)

Very true :) Everyone does everything a bit differently, and most LFS don't do anything special with their holding tanks when they're up for sale as well. Just recounting my experiences with them - I think they just look happier in their own type of environment. Much the same as most of us probably wouldn't set up a saltwater tank using river rock, treasure chests with bubbles coming out of it, and then put tangs and clown fish in there ;D

Yeah, a lot of people are surprised that the mix that I have works. It's a very active tank, but I have been thinking about starting a saltwater tank, I REALLY want a Lion fish, even though there venomous, there really cool to watch. But I doubt that's a good beginner fish, so maybe I'll get more acquainted with saltwater before I get anything to exotic.

Lions are awesome fish. Keep asking questions here and you'll definitely succeed if you go with saltwater :)
