Clown - this is cool

what type is this, can find nothing but this pic.

 

WOW!!!! I would pay top dollar for that one......(salavating on my keyboard). Judging by the dorsal rays i would say it is almost certainly an A. percula as they have 9-10. Must be a crazy color variant. Thats going as wallpaper on my comp.

Are they cross breading clowns now?

 

I found this pic on Reef Keeping Online Magazine (October issue). I got two baby Maroons in today actually, and now i want this one!!

There have been crossbreeds A. percula with A. ocellaris with fertile offspring (percularis...)....a few oother the species have been documented to be able to be crossbred with fertile offspring resulting. We have come a very long way in a very short time with breeding of marine fish...hopefully we continue to.

 

So is that what this fish is Splender? Or is this just a juvenile?

 

Why is cross breeding of fish that don't breed in nature considered "coming a long way"?

I used to breed parrots...and I never thought it was a good idea to cross breed species. Of course, breeding for color variants is a different aspect. Same species, just playing on a recessive color or shape, or whatever.......

To conserve gene pools of species, cross breeding needs to be discouraged! Regardless of how beautiful the outcome may be. Quite often, the offspring are 'mules' (sterile) That says to me "not how nature intended"

BTW, That is a beautiful fish up top here....but I suspect it to be a color variant, not a hybrid.

I'm sure that anyone who thinks about the subject of cross breeding will come to the same conclusion and that is that it mainly just produces more problems. Anyway I am sure that the reference to coming a long way in breeding wasn't necessarily also endorsing cross breeding, but your point was valid and for good reason.

Anyway, I have seen that spectacular looking Damselfish before and be buggered if I can remember the name Oh well, I'll have to dust off a few books and try to find it
