    Hey Sea Splender....My Bad! ;)

I'm not picking a fight either.... :) as I love this forum site and everyone here is great! I guess I misinterpreted your comments. Indeed we have come a long way with marine fish and otherwise!!

I am just saying, the more crossbreeding that goes on, the less and less we will be able to distinguish a pure breed from the mutt. You can cross 2 species that look different and get one that looks like one visually, and carries genes for both. I can barely tell some of these fish apart on their on merits as pure species fish (this picture - case in point) let alone some minute change as a hybrid.

I understand you were not advocating the crossbreeding.... I was just clarifying my comments ;D

Sea Splender, you obviously have never kept African Cichlids before. Collection of these fish is very limited and we must preserve the locally breed specimens. If a fish is crossbred it disrupts nature no matter if it is in your home or in the wild. One day you will find that the collection of wild caught SW fish and corals will be restricted or prohibited. We don't need to cross breed we need to breed different fish.

I'm not trying to attack I am trying to enlighten

thats true. and that day might come sooner than we think.

btw some very unnatural yet universally accepted fishes are goldfishes. these were originally carps.

As long as the original species is being bred purley and the wild ones are not going on the endangered species list somewhere then its not doing the family of Amphiprion any harm.[/quote]

The harm is down the road when one can no longer visually determine what is a pure Amphiprion and what is not. Not everyone

    a. keeps good breeding records

    ...and

    b. is ethical and speaks truly of what they are selling.

And why does an animal have to be on the endangered species list to be respected and protected? Often, by the time we realize they need protection, the gene pool has become very limited. :D

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH BREEDING THEM IN OUR AQUARIUMS? I respect my fish, care for them, learn of thier natural hisrory, even develop deep fascinations with them...If we breed more in captivity (MAKE HYBRIDS, PURE BREED EM', GENETICALLY FRIGGIN ENGINEER THEM INTO PERFECT SUPER FISH< WHATEVER) then we wont have to worry of hurting the "originals" as much, if you want to push animal rights feel free as i am on that cruise liner as well. I see how picking a choosing certain traits may cause taxonomical chaos and muttle the beauty of the true species. If you cannot determine what is amphiprion and what is not then there is no relevance in resolving the two into seperate species, but as an aquarist not a marine biologist or a "Wild percula conservation activist" I highly dout the "breeders" (such as muwah) of modern society are bent on producing rare color morphs or desirable traits so much so that we may loose the genetics of the original creatures we were so facinated with originally. Its the part of the aquarium trade that is ill informed that fuels that fire of "make it pretty". It is unlikey nemo's will be lost in a whirlwind of muts, name one species of any animal that was bred so much that only the "muts" are left and thier section of the the web of life on terrafirma has holes in it large enough that its unraveling even in the slightest bit....humans appetites, hunting, and ignorance are the most widley agreed on perps of that statement. I'm done arguing. THis is heading way off base and is soon to be lost.

i have heard that captive breed percula's can have very different colorings. just a thought. i think i may even e-mail reef keeping online and ask them.
