I lost my large mated female percula a couple months ago. I then purchased a small immature clown to replace her. The male of the pair was turning female and he/she went carpet surfing last night. I have a cover ordered and wasn't sure if I needed to remove the juvenile from the DT to quarantine with the new juvenile that I will purchase to keep them from turning female. Will I risk them switching sexes in the 6-8 weeks of quarantine?

To answer your question to the best of my abilities is.. I don't believe they will change gender unless grouped with others of same species. By default they are all male as adults and stay so until in a group. Juveniles are sexless to my knowledge. Well...they can't really be sexless if they have gonads. Functionally and anatomically, clowns are all males until one becomes dominant. This individual will grow larger and undergo a second stage of gonadal development...becoming a female. Without the stimulus of other clowns, no dominance can be observed. It will remain male. So if you keep them apart they will be males and if you keep them together you will get this^^

    Happy fishing. :fish:

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
A lone clown will become a female, how long that takes is not really understood and I have never been able to get a definitive answer from a couple months to several months. Since you are going to QT the new one I would put your current clown in the QT as well to minimize the risk of ending up with 2 females.
