Most, if not all bonded pairs of clowns do this. And believe me, you're not the first to ask :D It's believed that clowns "twitch" to show signs of love or aggression. If he's picking up rocks, that's signs of "nest making", or at least wanting to make a nest. So it's definitely love twitching. Our male clown picks his rocks up in the vertical position (nose down) and normally the both twitch sideways.

It's considered very "normal" clown behavior. Maybe that's why they're called clowns? I'd be called a clown if I was orange, black, and white and twitched too. I'd also be called...well...nevermind.

wait a sec, picking at rocks means possible nesting! sweeeeeeeeeeeet! mine were doing that last night! i thought they might have been picking at copepods, even though i didn't see any in the tank.

The "spasms" are a sign of submission. It basically means that they are paired/finishing pairing. It is a great sign.

Well, not exactly picking AT rocks. More like picking UP rocks. Or attempting to pick them up anyways. Our little male normally can't lift the bigger ones  Don't think aquascape rocks. Think rocks you'd find in your sand bed.
