I want to get 2 clowns and I want opinions. Ocellaris Clownfish or True Percula Clownfish. The Ocellaris are listed as Community, and the True Percula's are listed as Semi-Agressive. Which one is better? I like the True Percula's because I think they are prettier, but would they do well with the rest of my fish being community because they are semi-aggressive. These are going to be the only clowns in my tank, are they only semi-aggressive if I have other clowns? Opinions please!

My Ocellaris only chase things away from their frogspawn they host. Otherwise they get along with everything. My female drew blood on me one day when I moved her home for a minute to reposition the rock it sits on.

I've seen percs act the same way but a bit more aggressively. They don't go after things for no reason, just protect their home area a little more actively.

oh and unless you have a very large tank with multiple anemones spaced well apart clowns can be considered HIGHLY aggressive towards other clowns in their tank, no matter the species. Unless you have a good plan and know what the risks are don't keep more than a pair of clowns in a tank. I've heard you can get away with a colony as long as you purchase them from the same brood at the same time - since only one will turn female. I don't know how much more difficult that is than a pair, but I have no desire to try it, so no real research on the matter.

I have both ocellaris and percula clowns. My ocellaris used to be a pretty big jerk - but he's really calmed down after 5 months or so. His aggression mostly showed with new additions and while protecting his territory. Now he's very nice and calm. So I don't know what that means!

My percula is not aggressive at all - didn't even notice the new wrasse. However, I think that's unusual, as I have heard perculas can be a bit territorial.

Generally speaking, tank bred ocellaris are thought of as being the nicest clownfish - but every fish is different.

I am only planning on adding 2 clowns, and it is going to be at the same time so they dont get mean to each other. The rest in my stocking list are all community fish. So in your opinin both type of clowns are about the same aggression level? BTY I am not planning on adding an annemene till after 6 months if at all. I have a HOB overflow, wouldent it get in there somehow? I have heard horror stories.....

My true percs are fine (2 of em). Like said, if you/other fish go near the anemone or their eggs, they'll make sure you get lost. Other than that, they have been fine with all other fish, even tho my 29G biocube was overstocked.

ok, sounds good. I think i will go with the True Percs. They are alot more vibrantly colored than the ocellarius clown
