Peering in with the lights off noticing the clowns are making wierd movments and kinda swimming stupidly aroudn the tank knocking into stuff. Hard to explain but maybe they're mating? Just kinda scary usually they are sleeping together. One is hosting some button polyps if this matters. Any info would be great

man... if I had a nickel for every "my clowns are acting strange" threads... I even started one myself not long ago...

this is just typical CLOWNfish behavior. It's in part how they get their name.... they're very goofy fish that act in a way most fish feel they're somehow "above" ... darn snobby fish.

I've seen my clowns swim upside down, do nose stands on the very tip of a rock they host, swim in tight circles for long periods of time then just stop and hold VERY still for a few seconds then spin in the other direction... move sand into a pile then move that pile somewhere else all day long, they bump into each other like they don't know the other one is there, they swim nose to nose (not lip locking), they will do barrel rolls in the PH currents, they fight with the fish on the outside of the tank (their reflection), they nip at m every time my hand is in the tank, they even mimic me I make faces at them and tilt my head side to side they roll in the same direction at the same time....

At night they're no less bizarre, they sleep on their sides and sometimes upside down or nose planted, wedged between a rock and the wall of the tank.... usually they're right side up just slowly swimming against the current... but they still look funny.

They're great fish with more character than any other fish I've seen. I wouldn't worry about them as long as they're eating and look plump and healthy. They're just being silly.

I've been thinking about getting a fish training kit and seeing if I can teach them tricks.

My tomato clown has been lowering his back to the ground and waving his fin as fast as he can and blowing the crushed coral all over the tank.... as if digging a hole with his tail!!!! Then he takes whole mouth fulls of the crushed coral and swishes it around in his mouth before spitting it out. I turned to 3reef to see if their was an answer. Your posts is very comforting Doug... Thanks!

Well said, Doug! Clowns are just plain weird, and I had a thread not too long ago also. Mine are now sleeping in separate corners.......hence my "clowns getting a divorce" thread!

As far as teaching them tricks, my son discovered that our female clown goes nuts over the laser pointer!
