I'm assuming you mean the technology has been around since the 40's, a Mustang from the forties would be a rare car indeed!!!;D

A friends' father worked as a diesel mechanic in that time frame, and I do recall his mentioning that they would install water injection systems. They could then "thin out" the flow of actual fuel, the water vapor would keep the engine from pinging and causing damage.
I believe this was done with diesels, not gas engines.

I wish I could remember how much of an inprovement they'd get in mileage from this, I think it doubled it.
This could probably be done on a carburated gas engine, but I think you'd be out of luck on a recent computer equiped models.

Yes My father was a mechanic for fighter planes and he also was he also raced Grand Nationals in the 40,50 and 60's He used to tell me how turbos and blowers worked and showed me how they injected water with Ethanol in to the manifolds of the superchargers for faster climbing rates and speed burst they had a term for it it ? I guess to days they would call it afterburners ? But the water and ethanol was to keep the ping from timing advancement from happening and it compressed the fuel into the cylinders a little tighter . Its also a old trick in the days of high sulphure oil's and leaded gas to spray water into the Carburetors to knock the deposits from the valve seats faces .

Anyone more interested in the water methanol injection kits can check them out here:

I have an Audi with the 1.8 Turbo. The water meth injection kits started to become popular to get temp down, more dense air, and more hp.
I think similar results could be accomplished by slowly trickling nitrous into the intake manifold by the MAF. It would cool the hot compressed intake air from the turbo...and you could run higher boost more safely,

    Forgot about this site too:
