So after about 2 months, i finally received my custom sump yesterday. Needless to say, i ran out of patience after 2 months and thankfully it finally came. Everything is perfect on it except for one thing. The maker added 1 inch more to the return section and took away 1 inch from the skimmer section, making my $165 skimmer not fit in the custom sump that i designed specially just to house this monster skimmer. I really refuse to send it back for him to make it right because it will just take too long and would be unacceptable. My question is, what should i do from here? The owner of the store i made this sump out of sells skimmers and aquariums (located in CA, and im in OH). in all honesty, im willing to swap skimmers for one that fits but i dont know if he will. my octopus skimmer that i have is BRAND new and never ever used, its in perfect condition. I cant return it to its manufacturer "because i dont have the original box." so i really dont know what to do from here. i dont want a $165 skimmer to go to waste and just sit around here and even if i sold it and bought another one, the manufacturer of this sump still wouldnt pay for his mistake. Any ideas? Any ideas what his course of action is going to be if i tell him this situation?

I always build my own sumps for exactly this reason. plus it is a whole lot cheaper.
Personally, I would redo it myself. Remember, if you want it done right, do it yourself ;)

Do you have proof of the dimensions that were originally agreed upon? If so, the store is at fault and should offer to trade in your skimmer for another one of equal value.

have you asked the manufacturer to fix his mistake? Clearly it's his fault if you can confirm the specs you gave him are different than what he made for you.
If you don't want to persue that then maybe you can cut out the baffle and add in one in the correct location?

all else fails then sell the skimmer and then check with ColoradoReef on a suitable SWC skimmer to replace it.

I know but i just didnt have the resources for that job. But since i did have it professionally done and paid a lot of money i expect it to be perfect.

Yes i do. I agree, i will see what he is willing to do.

I havent yet. I really dont want to mess with the baffles because not only will that probably void the warranty, but as i said earlier, i payed a lot of money for this and i expect it to be made correctly, thats why i hired someone to do it for me ;)

I guess ill call him tomorrow and see how he wants to resolve this issue. I will definitely keep you guys posted.

ok well i finally contacted the manufacturer and we filed a dispute on paypal. He responded to that but not my calls but anyways its a big mess and not worth arguing over so he just offered me a skimmer that they manufacturer for half price and i had no choice but to take the offer. it just wasnt worth the effort. Thanks though for your opinions. i just wanted to update you all.

I would tell them to fix their mistake. If you paid for a certain spec, you should expect it to be made properly. Another reason I make my own sumps. I never could find one that fit what I wanted, and custom sumps are a waste of money IMO. But if you want something made professionally and you don't mind paying for it, and they goof up, they need to own the mistake and get you a new one sent out quickly.

lets call a spade a spade - all he did was make you spend more money with him without taking any responsibility for his mistake or doing anything to actually satisfy you for having spent your hard earned cash on his product or service.

Do you like their skimmer? If yes & you don't want to continue dispute, it's not too bad. You can always resell your new skimmer. If you don't like their skimmer, I'd send the sump back and ask for full refund and find different manufacturer to build a new sump.

Hey cira, this was caused by this manufacturer dude, not by you, therefore why should it become your problem? Plus, you're the one with the ca$h (or past tense) as in CUSTOMER!!!!

I agree, thats pretty chicken-sh**! And why should you have to accept a another of his products in exchange for his mistakes? He should've given the skimmer to you. Imagine how many other reefers are gonna get screwed?

Slow down buddy. Do it right.
