I think the thicker tubing is a safety measure incase something gets pulled into the tubing.

I used 1/4 " Outside Diameter tubing from Home depot...it fits all my airstones and the venturi hole on my pump...so I assumed it was standard airline tubing...

Speaking of....here is a pic of the small pump I got to run the DC...it's a Rio 400 (I know, I know....but it came with the right size stuff needed to hook everything up) Pic of the pump close up....

I also needed a powerhead in my fuge to agitate the water surface so that is one of the reasons I decided to use a pump for the DC. This pump will kill 2 birds with one stone...

Here is the finished, hook up , ::)

Believe me, by the time I get through you won't be able to see anything inside that tube except nice little bacteria!!!

Actually, most of the commercial DC's are opaque, crutkas, PVC is used because it is less expensive. This DC will be in relative darkness under my tank in a cabinet that is devoid of light...somebody asked about the tubing..I used 100' of 1/4" dripline tubing at a cost of $5...fittings so far have not been a problem because at the top of the coil I am switching to propylethylene tubing (for RO units) and will be using the quick fittings like Birdlady (shameless plug for Watts pressure fittings) is using ;D

I will post more pics after I get the top finished today... [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

    Drew,

I believe that 100% darkness, all the time is needed for these things to work :)

Thanks for the corroboration John.  ;)

The CD will be partitioned off into its own little box in the sump area of my cabinet. Basically just 2 pieces of plywood painted black on the inside and attached to the back and one side of the cabinet and extending from the top to the bottom of the cabinet. This will assure no light leakage into the area. The 2 lines (in and out) will be exposed to the sump light but I will paint them black. I think that should cover the darkness issue. Thank you everyone for your help and ideas!!

BTW the reason I used the clear acrylic was because I had it left from the skimmer I built. Might as well use it EHHH???

Here is a pic of the top on with no bio balls. I will pick them up or whatever I feel like using tomorrow. I think I am going to follow your lead BirdLady and Crutkas and go with a pump just for the CD, eventually a doser and extraneous stuff so as not to interrupt the return pump or skimmer. ;D
