Hey guys, as several of you know I've been attempting to major in Mechanical Engineering. Well, I've been rethinking that. The concept of Engineering is great to me, you know, learning how things work. I could care less about the math involved though. Deep down, I know I'd rather be the mechanic doing something with my hands than the engineer doing something with numbers.

So, I searched around. And I think I found another completely different type of major that would appeal to me. General Management with a minor in Leisure Studies. Leisure studies is basicly the study of what people do for fun and why. I've always been an outdoor enthusiest, and I've loved every part time tourist trap job I've had. So the idea of using this major and minor to work at a place like a Ski Resort (I wanna live in CO someday) or similar is like the heavens opening up to me.

Thoughts? Ideas? I know my mom dislikes the idea. But they're letting my brother major in English, so I know I'd have a better job opportunity after college than he will

Hey whats wrong with language or art degrees? Starbucks will always need employees.
It sounds good. The only thing I can say is follow what you love. If it's really a resort type thing you're going after, you may want to swap the minor and major. Or switch up the general management to business management. But either of those are great because they can be applied to damn near anything you would do later down the road.
Another huge aspect of resort operation and employment with them is marketing, so that is another thing to consider.
What is it exactly that you want to do at said resorts? There are a hundred different duties, so figuring out which one will be yours is where I would start before deciding on the education path. You don't need a degree to run the rental counter or serve food for instance ;)

my personal opinion is i think its so crazy asking a young person what do you qwant to do with the rest of your life? heck i hardly know. if youre not 100% sure , take a year off and decide. shockingly my then 19 yr old did that (taking the old mans advice) lol , and decided what course of action he wanted to take. hes enrolled in an automotive marketing\management course , and enjoying it immensely. so no rush jwin, take your time and decide.

General management is a very general thing. I mean that in a good way. You will have skills that will drop you into management jobs much easier than a lot of other majors. If you like the leisure studies than I say go for that too. I think the best college careers are made up of something realistic like general management and something less usable like leisure studies. I'm having the same dilemma by the way. I have no idea what I want to be but I have to pick soon.

What the heck, your leaving a mechanical degree for a general management degree! I'm an Aerospace and Mechanical double major and it's the bomb. But hey, if that's what you want to do then who am I to say you can't. Good luck with either way you go.

college is a complete waste of time and money! I am in it now, microbiology major at penn state... It is pointless! every class is the same information and it doesnt even prepare you for the working experiences that you need to know when you get a job. A complete waste of 4 years of my life. I can read a book in a few hours and get 15 times more out of it than sitting through a semester of a professors lecture.

College is completely overrated and the only reason we "have" to go is because our society looks down upon the ppl who dont have a degree. Its so wrong

A college degree is a foot in the door. If you can't get your foot in the door how else you gonna get inside? Yes I agree with you but the reality is, you need one just so you have a chance in the job market,

this comes back to the "Prodistant Work Ethic"- the harder you work the better off you will be... and we all know thats not true at all!

the key to success is a firm base knowledge(intelligence), willingness to succeed or learn on your own(motivation), and most importantly an avid passion(affinity for something)

Do what you want to do.

If you might be unhappy doing a particular line of work, definitely don't major in it.

You can always switch majors. It's fun to do, and like me it might take 7 years to graduate from going from a BS to a BA.

You know they make movies about guys like me;0
