I really wish choosing a career was easier than it is. I want a job that I enjoy, but, at the same time, a job that makes me a good amount of money :p

No I haven't yet. I can look into it.

Yeah it was either 6 or 8 years I believe. I'll see if I can find the paper to be sure.

Just checked payscale.com, not sure what happened to that 200k lol it's down to 100k-ish. If you can get a job at an aquarium or someplace that requires basic marine biology, it'd be a good place to start, you gain experience, alright pay, and you can go for doctor's/phD while there.

IMO, if you do what you love, money shouldn't be that important.

That is what I saw as well. It sounds like quite a lot of work, having a job and going to college at the same time.

I graduated from FSU with a Bachaloer of Science degree in Env. Science. I was a biology major for a bit of time before switching. I was showing interest in marine biology until I was informed that there isn't a degree, just a certificate (4 additional coursez) to go along with a bio degree; it comprised mostly premed. This was 4 years ago, so this may be outdated insight.

Look into Miami, if you can afford the private tuition.

Great info. I didn't know that. Looking through, I believe what you are saying is still true. I really need to think things through. At least I have a bit of time to plan until I have to choose, so I'll use that time wisely.

You'll have to earn your stripes and pay your dues. Many graduates cant even find jobs, let alone make 35k out of college; that's a lot. Many graduates are forced into taking in paid internships.

It doesn't matter what your degree is in, you're not going to be paid a ridiculous sum of money just because you have a degree. It doesn't work that way, no matter how many younger generationers think it does. You'll find that once your employed, your degree is trivial. You'll be learning once again.

It just seemed to me at first that after spending 8 years in college with your time and money, it would help with your salary, but I guess that isn't the case. I'm learning quite a lot tonight. I really appreciate it :) I just wish we learned at least a bit about this in high school.

I think that's one of those careers where many many get weeded out over a course of 20 years. Probably not a lot that are making 200K. Those are probably some very coveted jobs for people with some serious talent, drive & motivation.. Not to discourage you though. I've spent the last 25 years chasing a career where the path may be similar. Years and years of making practically nothing and now I'm a major airline Captain. I did not chase this career for financial reward though. I truly love it and simply can't live with out flying. Follow your heart but be cautious and aware.

It does, but not immediately. You'll pay your dues like everyone in front of you. Your parents weren't making 50-100 a year at 25 either.

The sad truth abou many science careers is that most funding comes from state and private donations. Think about job availability as a marine biologist and where your employers income would come from to pay for your salary.

I will definitely take your advice. You're not discouraging me at all, I'm just thinking about it more carefully now :) I thought about being a pilot at one point, but I would probably find it to be too stressful for me :p I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying it, though.
