That is true. I'll keep thinking about it.

My mom had a masters in bio and was making 20,000 out of medical school.

Also, if you pursue a doctorate, think about research at the university level. Its about all a doctorate is good for.

I went to FSU and loved it. My best friend also went to FSU and graduated with a Marine Biology degree. He now lives WAY out in Alaska and researches Salmon eggs. It's what he wanted to do, at least the moving out to Alaska part that is. I think Marine Biology is a labor of love more than $$$$.

I have a degree in Marine Biology from the University of Miami. UM was and is an awesome place to get a Marine Bio degree - when I went (20 years ago) it was actually the best place to get a mariner bio degree. That being said, it is a private school, and unless you can get a great scholarship, I would not suggest spending the money and would stick with a state school.

From a degree perspective, I highly suggest going with Marine Bio. I loved it. I had so many great opportunities in school. I was a Resarch Diver for NOAA through UM, I was a lab assistant out at RSMAS, it was awesome. Also, science degress are hard to get, and they are well respected. I was able to land a great job in the medical software field right out of college, and I have built a great career out of it (I needed a well paying job to support my reef tank habit!). The Marine Bio degree was attractive to my company originally because of the analytical skills it required, which transport well in to the busines world.

I would agree with the others that have said that it is hard to make good money in the Marine Bio world. Not impossible, but not easy either. My suggestion is to get the degree, knowing that you will have awesome experiences in college, and you will have the option of grad school, or even doing what I did and jumping ship for the business world upon graduation.

I have two daugters now, and I am encouraging them to study anything and everything regarding science. It will only help them in the future.
