colt taking over

I purchased a colt coral 6 months ago, it was about 4" tall and atached to a small rock. Now its 12"+ and has also atached to the LR on my reef wall.it has split in two down to about a1"x1" piece that still attaches the two, the larger branch has about a 3" diameter and the other is a little smaller. The problem is that the one in front is rubbing the front glass,the back one the LR wall. Where they touch wall/glass they dont open up much so id like to split them to give each more room but dont have a clue as to how to do this any advice would be great. Its in an 80g tank so id be moving the one only a foot or two.
