Sounds to me like a pretty nasty virus. I would suggest that you take only the recent documents you need and save them to a flashdrive and do a system restore.

Start - All programs - Accessories - System Tools - Sytem Restore

If after you do a system restore you still have the same problem, then you have a nasty virus and might be looking at a new windows reinstalltion.

Let me know if the system restore works
    Good Luck!

Agree with system restore. My computer was really messed up a couple years ago and the tech guy had me do a system restore and it fixed everything. Make sure to save anything really important to a USB or something, just in case.

Most computers now have windows built into the restore option. If your computer came with no discs for recovery, this is probably the case. If the earlier date option will not work. Then you will probably have to do a full restore/recovery. Which will make it like the day you came home with it....A real PITA and you will lose everything.

If a system restore doesn't work for you, make sure you get everything onto a flash drive that you're going to want backed up.

If you use the system restore disks from your manufacture, everything will be gone. Do you remember if it came with disks for sure? Some computers come with the restore stuff, hidden on a separate section of the hard drive. When the computer starts up, it may say something like "Press F1 to perform system restore." (If you gave me your model number I could try to find out for you.)

If you decide you want to go to Windows 7, again make sure you have everything you want of it first. When you put in the disk, it should ask you if you want to do a clean install or not. This is the option you'll want to use.

I had to reinstall Vista on my laptop, and I did restore factory settings, because my laptop came with Vista on it. If you installed the operating system yourself, I think you'll need the disc to reinstall it. I could be wrong.

If that doesn't work, I would uninstall your operating system and get Windows 7. Don't get Vista! I have it and it sucks. But I'm going to upgrade to Windows 7 soon.

You should actually try a couple of AV removal programs before even considering a reload of windows. If you dont format during the reload the virus will just stick around. System restore will fix the problem temporarily but unless you clean the virus off you will just get the same symptoms again. System restore just fixes installed applications it doesnt remove the bad ju ju.

Get Malware Bytes and Avast by going to download.com. Both programs are free and work well at removing spyware which is probably what you have.
