I would not even bother with any AV programs. Back up your hard drive to an external device, then verify that the backup contains your important files.

Format your hard drive; re-install your OS and applications. If you attempt to repair your OS you will likely be chasing ghosts on your computer until you do finally re-os it.

If your computer is able to run windows 7; install it, otherwise run XP.

Windows Vista if fully patched and the hardware is supported, runs just fine - Vista got a really bad rap becaused it was released way too soon, and ran like crap on older hardware. If your computer runs Vista it should run 7 just fine; and it is a much improved OS.

Vista even with all the patches is crap. Its slow, crashes all the time. Sorry. Upgrade to windows 7 if you can, you wont regret it. Or go back to xp if your laptop cant run 7.

    hmmm...

I ran Vista on 5 computer (4 desktops, 1 laptop) for the last 6+ months; never crashed, never had any issues...

Note... I never use a computer with a pre-installed OS, If I purchase a computer with an OS installed the first thing I do is format the hard drive an install a fresh OS -- gets rid of all the pre-installed crap that causes computers to crash, lol

Note 2.. All of my computers have Windows 7 installed now, and it is a much improved os.

Do not do a system restore. You will have to manually select the files you want to keep from your hard drive. Only keep video, text, and audio files. Anything else can have a virus in it. This means you cannot copy and paste a folder to an external hdd. After you do this you will need to reinstall windows. Make sure you do a full hdd format and not the quick format.

Switching to a mac will not solve the problem. There are virus for mac OSs however, they are not as common because mac is not as widely used as windows OSs. Once the majority of people use Macs you will see windows viruses drop and macs go up. This is because virus writers don't want to waste their time writing code for an OS that is not what the majority of people use.

I can't stand vista but one of the main reasons for all the problems with it is because most people's machines cannot run the OS. The min requirements are greatly understated. The 32bit version is useless because you can only use about 3.25 gigs of ram and vista really needs at least 6 gigs. This means 64bit is the only version that can be used properly.
