Ugh, I think I've got it big -time. Just got back from a week in NYC and my roommates didn't do the best at maintaining my tank. a bag of bio-pellets was blocking my return pump's intake so my flow in the tank was low! And my Koralia 750 was going in reverse??? So I have had relatively stagnant water for 1-7 days.

Anyway, my algae is now is some huge blooms and I'm worried it's bryopsis. No one eats it and it looks like mini ferns.

If it is Bryopsis, what's my first course of action, magnesium to 1800+? If so, do I need to remove anything (I've got a maxima clam and other cleaner inverts, two clownfish, algae blenny, and a yellow tang). Coral-wise, I've got everything, soft, small and large polyped stonies.

Params looked good last night despite horrible flow conditions:

    Ammonia: 0-5
    Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0 (was surprised at that)
    PH: ~8
    Temp: ~79 F

I'll check for phosphate, magnesium, dKh, and calcium levels after work when I have more time.

    Here are the pics:

Yes. If it's indeed fern-like as it appears to be in the picture.

I have the same issue. Raising your mag to 1600+ is probably the best way. I am having a hell of a time getting my mag up. But it seems to be making a difference.

If you aren't already, you may want to get a few filter socks. I am changing mine out every few days for the algae that ends up dislodging from my rock.

Good luck and try not to get discouraged.

Ok, thanks guys, I'll work on getting my levels up tonight. Do I want to slowly reach 1600, over the course of a week, or is 1-2 days ok?

And what effects will it have on other organisms, should I setup another tank for inverts or certain types of corals while I do this?

Depending on how much coral you have, raising it may not be easy. Maybe start with the recommended dose or a little more. Check next day for change. I've read you can safely raise it from 50 to 200 per day, though I would recommend multiple daily doses rather than all in one shot. I supposedly will not affect your fish, coral or inverts (hasn't mine, yet) but that is why I would recommend starting slow, and build up dosing size over time.

I am just speaking from what I've read around the internet, and my limited experience over the past month of trying to get rid of mine.

PS: You may want to invest in a rector for your BioPellets and maybe do GFO. Low reading don't necessarily mean you don't have problem nitrate or phosphate, just that your algae is using it all.

Ok, thanks for the tips. I do have some phosphate pellets so I'll add those in.

Will carbon filter out magnesium? I'll plan on removing that as well if it will.

I'll just dose it a little in the morning and night and see what happens, I'm not in a hurry.

If you are talking about GFO (Granulated Ferric Oxide) do you have a reactor. GFO needs really slow flow to work.
This is the one I have.
Dual BRS GFO and Carbon Reactor - English
    Does both GFO and Carbon.

Never heard of an issue with carbon and magnesium.

Slowly build up the dosing sizes and don't forget to test.
