I came across this fish a few years back at my lfs. At the time no one there knew what it was. We assumed it was some sort of hawkfish because it is like a miniature version of one so we were just calling it a Pygmy Hawkfish. It is actually a Highfin Perchlet.Plectranthias sp.
Yep it is in the Anthias family.
I would characterize there behavior as somewhere between a grouper and a hawkfish. While small in size they can definitely handle themselves.Must be kept singally or expect a battle royal to ensue. Also they may bully gobies or blennys in a confined tank. I had mine in a 90 and he never bothered any of my gobies or jawfish. My dotty back would not even mess with him. They are not as active as a hawkfish but not as lazy as a grouper.
I just got a new one because the last one I crushed with a rock when moving my tank.Ouch!! My girfriend asked me if both of his eyes were supposed to be on one side of his head and I almost had to crack her one.;D I have the new one in my 24 gal nano as its sole occupant.
A really cool fish that has the ability to change from a dull red to a vivid red you can see from across the room. They have neat green eyes that give it alot of personality.
Sorry for the pic quality still waiting for the dslr.

I've had one for a year! His name is Spike. He is so much fun - one of my favorites!

    Enjoy him!!
