I just finished framing out the area where I am placing my aquarium and I began to wonder about placing a cooling fan. here is the location i want to place it

and here is an over all shot.

So my question is it okay to mount the fan so that the air blows down at the top of the tank or should it blow across the water? Also for those that use cooling fans which ones do you use?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

dont take my word for it, but i am sure that it would be fine to blow down, then its not only cooling the water, but also your lights as well,

I agree with luna. I am also wondering about your fireplace insert and how hot the wall gets?

I thought about that to. it puts heat out the front not much to the side. the good thing is that we dont use it that much so if it gets hot we will leave it off.

Is that a vent less unit or a power vented to the outside ? also is the alcove I'd be worried about the CO'2 if they are vent less type. Is that space you have taped off is that just Sheetrock ? If so it will not hold up very long You should replace any Sheetrock with green board at least and better would be the wounder board like cement almost used in wet areas like bathrooms and locker rooms and such.

yes the fire place a vented to the outside. I did put the green bathroom drywall in the top section. Should I put it in the lower section at tank level and below as well?

I'd either replace it with the green board or at least several coats of good outside enamel paint.. Saltwater will lift latex flat paint right off the Sheetrock. Yes you will have to figure someway to move air out from under the hood.. If you can see the ducting for the fireplace ? Just follow that then get a outside termination kit and a small turbine blower 89.00 or so for the blower very quiet and move some air . And use alum. flex venting or some flex ducting comes in 25 ft boxes.. 4 5 6 inch ..
