No this can work. I have a kid so I'd have to be very carefull. I'm thinking that I'll fence off the cooling unit outside with a safe distance between it and the fence. Then I'd have an interlaced water pipe running from the unit to my house. So the ammonia would never actually enter my home only cool water...... I'm still looking at the possiblity. I'd use it to chill my tank and replace and AC in a single bedroom.

It still seems to dangerous to implement and comes with a better chance of something bad happening than good IMO...but best of luck to you!

No really... I'm big into diy but...

From a practical standpoint, a little chiller 1/5th hp-ish is cheaper and more reliable than what you are looking at. Just think about the pain if you crash the tank. Spend a few bucks on a chiller. It is probably not much more than the diy you are looking at.

hi there, i'm from the philippines and believe me now it's summer here my water temperature goes way too high, my remedy is to put ice in my tank, well not really dierctly but as i got bunch of ice out of my fridge, i put it inside a sealed container and put in my main tank, and another small pack in my subtank, well the ice melts totally within two hours and the chill will last up to 8-10, then i put in another batch as soon as my temperarure rises.
it's a manual thing and it doesn't cost any much.

Well be sure you have some sulfur sticks to locate any leaks and also may want to pay up your life insurance payments.. Years ago we where deactivating and old dairy that used ammonia as the refrigerant One whiff from a 10 inch mechanical flange seal knocked 4 of us of the scaffolding and sent us to the emergency room we assumed there where no leaks ):
Next trip we had plenty of sulfur sticks. This is not Boo Peep ammonia that is used here .. I know of no place that uses the refrigeration ammonia any longer except maybe some large commercial old ice making company.. That's why they stopped using it in the old style home refrigerators and DuPont developed the old prehistoric freon gas people would punch a hole in the Evaporator coil with a knife trying to speed up the defrosting time and many died when the ammonia under pressure hit them in the face.. It will KILL you..

You'd be safer and easier to just get a new condensor unit that is ran off of Natural gas instead of electricity the gas boils the freon into a liquid instead of the compressor pumping it down into a liquid.

On second thought if you even consider trying this all I can say is you or anyone reading this wants to try this , then you are a damn fool.. Everything is not a hobby .
