My tank is only a couple months old but I do not have any fish and my pod population is strong. All I have are 2 blue hermit crabs, 4 margarita snails, and 1 mathix crab
There are so many pods it looks like the rocks are moving and there are several hundred along my glass while my lights are on.
I also have recently started seeing small pods so I guess they are succesfully reproducing.

What is the floss filter and or scrubber used for? Is this for them to live in?

Yes the floss would be an environment for the pods, it allows them to reproduce better. Same with the sponge.

I'd probably go with floss that's pretty coarse, kind of mimicking chaeto. I'd watch out for getting a sponge at a some store, like someone else mentioned they are now frequently soaked in chemical cleaners. I checked a nice 3M sponge I was using to clean a tank and it says explicitly "NOT SAFE FOR AQUARIUMS" whoops! Nothing really terrible has happened to the tank but I stopped using it right away obviously.

Well I picked up a little 2 gallon aquarium with lights an air stone and undergravel filter (prob won't use this) I am going to order some chaeto from Reef Cleaners and it is already suppose to have pods seeded in it. So my pod farming begins!

I hope this will be able to help me sustain a good pod population for the mandarin when I get it.

Johnnie Mac, if you have Chaeto in your fuge then you don't need a bath puff or sponge. If you don't have chaeto in your fuge, why not?
