as some of you know I have a coral beauty that I got from the neighbor who was so badly picked on her color was faded and fins torn to shreds.

Her color is looking wonderful, she is swimming around a lot.

Well I have been watching her for 2 days now swimming the entire tank around and around. What makes me wonder if she is blind is I just watched her bump into the magna-clean. I moved it from its normal place. Her eyes look fine. I compare them to the other coral beauty and don't see any cloudiness. Also when she swims she tens to swim the outside of the area and towards the top where there are no rocks to bump into.

Could I just be over reacting? Or can a fish survive while blind? Can fish be blind?

Hi Rogerstammy - there are a species of fish or at least one that I know of anyway in freshwater called the blind cave fish - the fish lives in total darkness and thus the species evolved and the eyes dissapeared completely

the fishes lateral line contains its sensory organs and is a proximity alert as such- they feel more than they see - magnets may interfere with the organ or change the signal

if the fish was sighted then it could see the magnet and ignore the lateral line implied proximity warning - if it was blind , then it would bump into it

fish feed using smell rather than sight (I was a carp angler in the 90s using flavoured boiled baits my night catch rate often exceeded my day time catch rate so boilie colour was not the issue, flavour, label, signal was what caught the carps attention.
    - so again if it is blind, it will not starve to death

Remove the magnet and just use it as and when needed - I never leave mine on tank permanent anyway (Idiosyncracy of mine)

I'd imagine a flashlight shined into the water at night would get some response from a fish that could see.

    Might be worth a try?

the underlying point of my previous post and Im sure you got it - was Your coral beauty will still live a reasonably happy and contented life and because he/she is in your tank, rather than in the sea, is unlikley to become a victim of a predator which a blind fish in the ocean would probably end up being

    dont feel bad about it!

not wanting to make light of your situation but - my wifes grandmother is 80 and keeps walking into the coffee table, she eats well and is very mobile, I could shine a flash light at her - or I could move the coffee table ? ( sparky I hope you are laughing please?)

which do you think I did?
