I was checking out my tank today and I saw serpent star hiding under a rock(which is usual) but then noticed two of his arms had been chopped off. About half of each one was missing. I watched a little while longer and along came my Coral Beauty and he began to pick at him, but not too aggressively. From what I could tell the CB didn't actually pull any tissue off...he and my yellow tang pick at the rocks constantly so it may have just been by mistake. Anybody else had this experience?

If not him, what else? The only other things I have are a pair of clowns, a pair of fire shrimp, and a couple damsels. I suppose it is possible he got stuck to a powerhead, but he would have had to do a lot of work to get to one of those.

While I'm at it, does anybody have any experience keeping a flame hawkfish with fire shrimp. I have read that the hawkfish my be aggrresive towards some small ornamental shrimp, but my fire shrimp are bigger than any hawkfish I would get.

    Thanks for the replies.

From what I've read hawk fish will eat shrimp. So I'm guessing that in time when the hawk fish grows he will pick at your shrimp until he kills it. jmtc. I have for the longest time wanted a hawk fish, but I too have two large fire shrimps and don't want to see them become hawk food.

I think serpent sea stars can detach their tentacles(if thats the proper term), if they feel threatened. As for the hawkfish, I'm not sure but I've heard they will attack pretty much any invert.

Is it possible that he could have lost them in a powerhead or wavemaker accident. This happened to my starfish and he made a full recovery.
