coral beauty V blue tang

back again guys, lack of funds has kept my tankl quiet till recently, but now its full steam ahead, i still cant log in either matt.

i have live rock covered in algae, jus wonderin which fish u guys would choose , i know both are good at keepin algae under control, i like both and cant decide.
ive also got to occelaris clowns, a bar goby and a golden headed sleeper.

how old is your tank now? the tang should be in a tank at least 6 months. both will eat alge i think the tang will do a number on it, the angel would be a little hardier of a fish. o ya what size is the tank cant remember?

 

If your tank doesn't have at least 48" of lateral swim room I wouldn't suggest the tang! A convict or sailfin tang are also good if you have a larger tank.

 

good point there craig i forgot to ask grasshopper how big is the tank? i think you mentioned what you were considering before but i forgot what size u were looking at

Here are the only 3 fish I have in my 55 gal. Aquarium...All good Algae eaters...but "habits" are quite different...

The Yellow Tang is a voracious "grazer" - never stops combing every inch of rock for Algae of any size to eat...

The Blue tang mellowly just follows her along and seems content with "leftovers" and whatever might break loose...actually never see her eat much...but "pecks" at everything along her way with no rhyme or reason...

The Coral Beauty is a "glass licker" --- constantly "licking" up anything at all that shows up on glass...

Recently, as I have so little Algae growth in tank now...have started to supplement with some flakes (the Tangs like) - but Coral Beauty shows no interest...and some "Nori" now and then for the Yellow Tang. (she does break up and leave bits for the the blue to pick up on later)...

Maybe because I got all when young and fairly small, they are all quite content and seem to like each other well...often "schooling" in a group with the yellow in the lead - she is certainly the dominate one.

Only sign of a "squabble" I ever witness is when all three decide to visit cleaner shrimp at once...then is more of a pushing match to see gets most "attention" --- the Coral Beauty usually gets "advantage" here...

One might conclude from above, I might be spending too much time watching tank events...suppose I am,,but that is what this is all about is it not?

This is a major reason why they get along. Fish when introduced as juveniles are usually not as territorial and don't have a predisposition to aggressiveness. They will establish their own pecking order and generally get along.

 

ive had trouble accessing the site, im updating my profile now, since i opened this thread ive purchased a bicolour blenny, i found it had more personality and has destroyed all hair algae in my tank

 

I just picked up a very pretty coral beauty a few weeks ago, like velvet and almost glows under the moon light!!! Very active but also very jumpy when anyone gets near the tank. Also came down with Ich, but seams to be fighting it, with the help of a new Cleaner Shrimp. Never had a tang so no input there, tank is only 36" wide. Weird thing is that I have a mated pair of Maroon Clowns which the female has given up on the male and now spends her time with the Coral Beauty (not fighting).

 

My Coral Beauty also initially covered with little white specks after 1st day in tank..also quickly removed by cleaner shrimp..

Is that what ICK looks like? - I just figured was normal parasite hanging about in tank. The Coral Beauty spends much more "time" with the "cleaner shrimp" (named, "Sabastion" of course) - than all other residents in tank. Seems much more susceptable to whatever it is. But she stays pretty "clean" now.

My Maroon Clowns, as mentioned in other thread, have had an initial rough go with each other, but just as I was making plans to remove one of them, seems they have sorted out things between themselves. One has developed strong relationship with my bubble coral..other hangs out at far end of tank most of time. --- "meetings" are totally non-violent now. Seems like they have sorted out who is going to be who and pecking order has been established. - is least is my hope. Will keep close eye on.

Online LFS sent two closely matched in size is what apparently caused major problem. While one never knows for sure, usually things work out between them in time after a "usual" fighting period.
