A product for people with ailments.

"Our Coral Calcium 1 is 100% pure marine grade coral calcium (from dead coral found in Okinawa Japan) with NO additives, except for vitamin D, and is mined from pockets found on the ocean floor by vacuuming up the coral droppings. They are granted permission from the Japanese government before they start to gather coral. They do NOT harm the living coral reef in any way."

Yeah I am sure a bunch of people stirring up debris and making noise around the reef while 'vacuuming' doesn't do any harm at all. givemeabreak

Yah, real fishy. This is coming from the country that expanded their own whaling quotas by 250 for "research", wiped out an entire reef of really rare corals and fish to build an airport on a fake island (that sinks 1 foot a year, they say it'll probably be useless in 5 years). Go japan, way to help save our ocean, the base of all life on this planet.

    im_pissedRe: Coral Calcium

Calcium is Calcium, With so many available sources of calcium on this planet for human use it makes no sense to harvest calcium for a the sea, Just because a reef is not growing does not mean that nature is not using the coral skeletons, I am quite sure nature has found a use for dead coral these past few millions years without the help of man to harvest the coral. There is NO documented proof that Calcium from coral, milk, chickne bones, or limestone is a cure all for many medical problems. Absorbtion is what makes calcium effective in the body not the source of calcium. Green veggies, ice cream, im_pissed cheese and yogurt are much more enjoyable ways to get calcium in the body than to support taking it from the ocean.

You guys are cracking me up. Looks like we think a like! :thumbsup1:

On a side note, Japan's whale season just started. They are killing them (Minkes) for 'research.' Most of the meat gets sold anyway and ends up in school lunch rooms too. Grrrr....

Calcium is not calcium... There are many forms of calcium. E.g. Calcium chloride, calcium sulphate, calcium hydroxide, calcium carbonate, calcium manganate, etc.

Each form of calcium has a different function as it is bio-avalable at different rates for different life forms

Coral Calcium is sold for human consumption. Not for aquarium use.

Calcium that comes from Okinwawa, Japan contains all of NSW's trace elements.

Several companies sell a product that is called.. Coral Calcium. All are slightly different.

The main difference in differerent brands of "coral calcium" is the magnesium content. -- As with marnie reef aquariums, there is a optimal relationship between calcium and magnesium.

Magnesium is added to the coral collected at shallow depths at the time of packaging.

I am posting a reply to this thread because there might be some "reefers" that are also into personal health.

As for Kent and SeaChem being "fishy", I agree.

Calicum IS Calcium a metal with an atomic number of 20 One of the Alkaline Earth metals. Its bio avaialblity is dependant upon it's form not how that form is produced. Hence Coral Calcium is just Calcium carbonate , the same as oyster shell calicum carbonate, reagent grade calcium carbonate or calicum carbonate from the skeletons of land animals. With so many more economical and biologoical superior forms of calcium carbonate available it makes no sense to use the skeltons of corals meet the nutritional calcium requirements of humans or any other land animal.

Calcium is calcium.. OK... Then take tums... that is Ca Co3.

Coral Calcium that is being discussed is a mixture of calcium and magnesium.

Want to split hairs... go for it.

strange indeed! In the seaside beaches close to reefs dead corals are washed away and can easily be picked up.

i think it's a rip off. you want coral calcium? pick them on beaches near reefs (where TONS can be found). process them however you deemed right.

stupid of me. in the philippines the islands are surrounded by reefs. different case elsewhere! hehehehe
