If your parameters and salinity all check out (and have been doublechecked) I would assume unhealthy corals in the first place prior to shipping, or poor shipping conditions or bad packaging. Although like was mentioned lots of people have issues with Xenia even in otherwise healthy mature reefs, although overnight disintegration is pretty dramatic.
I would just doublecheck your parameters and don't worry about a nutrient spike, 2 frags shouldn't negatively affect things.

I don’t think air would hurt. I just got a small colony, and when I put it in the tank it was exposed to air. It’s been 3 days, and it’s happy and pulsing,

As a rule and my first guess with out seeing the coral is this type of necrosis is 99% the time the result of starvation , Little chunks just started to fall off then larger hunks then entire branches are all over the place , If you are lucky all the little chunks you can not get out will blow up under rocks and die or in a yr or so you will have the little Trees all over .

Oh, and I bought them at a lfs, so they didn’t go thru the stress of shipping.

Fortunately, I only spent $20 for 5 frags including shipping. A kind person sending me some stuff to help me get going. If one frag makes it, I'll come out fine. I will definitely rubber band next time. I learned something...

I can't be that upset when some tries to do something nice and it doesn't work out.

    1. No accuracy is not all that critical close is good this is the first problem I see people wanting to micromanage their tanks to the smallest degree . I never did .
    2. people tend to knee jerk to much there tank is going along pretty good then they see or hear of a article by some aquarium God and they just can't wait to get it applied to their system .

And 3 Yes patience is the main Key there are several here and far more on other boards that I have helped to slow down go back tot the old school basics and they all have had great sauces or they say to do anyways .

people now in the last 20 yrs think they can add some L/R and sand and baaam instant reef the next day . But thats not how it works and these are the ones I see most often fighting problems till the end. its not about how much $$$ you can throw at the tank but time and patients is far far more critical .
