yes you would need to buy a new fixture, or i guess you could buy another fixture of pc's to boost you up too 4 wpg's, but i think your better off with the t5's or halides, pc's are expensive to replace.

Just want to clarify that your not talking about a 2x65w daylights/actinics combo lighting (total of 130w). Because really, you wont be able to keep anything but softies/zoanthids. And even then, your soft coral will have a hard time growing under it. If you actually do have a 4x65w (260w), you would be able to keep a good portion of LPS as long as its within the top 6-12 inches of your tank. But if you have extra cash laying around, upgrading to a T5 setup would be worth your while if your looking at adding lps/sps corals and clams.

I have the same tank you have. I run PCs. I have 4x55W and 2x65W. You can see what I have been successful with by looking at my signature. However. PC's with our tank size is flat out not recommended. When I upgrade, I am going for the 8x54W Nova Extreme Pro. Take a look at it. It will penetrate nicely to about 21 inches. Our tanks are 24 inches deep, but taking into account about 1&1/2 inches are not used for water on the bottom or the top, that leaves 21 inches of water to the bottom. Good enough.

You should be able to keep mushrooms, star polyps, zoas and some leathers with that lighting. Keep your zoas higher in the tank and the mushrooms can be placed lower. You could try a frag of frogspawn or hammer coral mounted very high in moderate flow.

LPS in the top 4-5" of the tank, assuming your rockwork goes that high should be ok, can do most softies but you'd have to play with their positioning, no clams or anemone would survive in less than T5's

My 90 is going to be capped off with the Tek 8x54w T5 fixture, there is a cheaper version of it called the Maristar, Tangster sells both their really nice setups

I know absolutely nothing about lighting. Heres what I can tell you about my light fixture. It has four bulbs. Two are 65 watt PCs. The bulbs look like 2 long tubes attached to each other. The other two are actinic. I'm not sure the exact wattage, but i'll check. I have almost no money lying around. The reason I have PCs is that thats what came with the tank when I bought it off of craigslist. I have enough in the fish tank budget to buy an RO/DI system and livestock for the tank. Beyond that, my fish tank budget is going into converting my 36 gallon freshwater tank into a seahorse tank.

You can have a lot of fun with what you have. Zoas and mushrooms can be good starter corals.

I believe that all your lights would be 65 watts each whether they are actinic or not in that fixture.

I already have a zoa colony and some mushrooms. Can I do leathers and other softies or am I restricted to zoas and mushrooms. What about star polyps?

Yes, you can do leathers or any softies and star polyps. Kenya trees and colt corals are both very hardy and both are attractive fast growers. Anthelia is another softy that would work well in your system.
